The song of a distant howl pulled her from the peaceful ease of sleep into sexual urgency. Whimpering, January rolled onto her stomach and curled in on herself, trying to bury the blazing wave of need in Beck’s scent, which lingered on her pillowcase.

He was gone. She felt the absence of him not only in her body but also in the house. She wasn’t alone, though. Someone sat in the arm chair beside her bed, a quietly breathing shadow in the dark. Turning her head, she rested her cheek on the pillow and stared at the seated figure. Moonlight poured through her curtains but the angle was off and the light missed her companion. She should probably be afraid but her instincts didn’t go that way. Whoever he was, he was a Guardian. She knew that much.

“He’ll be back.” Cross leaned forward into the light, watching her with a frown between his eyebrows.

January closed her eyes. “I need him now. Tell him to come back now.”

“I can’t.” Genuine concern vibrated in the two short words. Cross shifted and the old chair’s springs creaked. He touched her bare shoulder. “He shouldn’t have left you like this. I’m sorry.”

She shrugged off his hand. “I’m not his responsibility.”

Cross didn’t answer for a long minute. January wedged her hands down between her legs and grasped her ankles. She sat down on her wrists, trying to find relief in the pressure of her forearms against her pelvis. That satisfied the insistent throb of her pussy for about twelve seconds. Then she caught the scent of Cross’s interest. Her body reacted to his pheromones but she held back from asking for him. She’d taken Cross into her body before, would accept him again, but it seemed wrong to do without Beck.

“No,” he finally said. “You are his responsibility but Beck’s right. You’re not only his. You have five more of us here and we’re all willing and able to get you through this. He left me and the others to stand for him.”

Turning her head again, she drew a deep breath through her nose. Testing and tasting his scent on the back of her tongue. He wasn’t Beck. Her heart wanted Beck but her body… Heat licked at her insides, an inferno that brought sweat to her skin.

Her body wasn’t so choosy. Beck was a Guardian and the Guardians were Beck.

“Alright,” she rubbed her cheek against the sheet and breathed Cross’s scent deep into her pores. She couldn’t wait. The fire would consume her if she tried. “Do it doggy style. I don’t want to see your face.”

“Anything you want, Jan.” His voice didn’t betray any sense of being offended, for which she was grateful. Cross wasn’t Beck but he was a good man and she didn’t want to hurt him.

Cross pushed out of the chair. “Do you have condoms?”

“Some of yours are on my dresser.” While Cross searched, she slid her fingers into her sheath and slowly pumped her hand, trying to make her slender fingers as effective as a man’s erection.
